If you have curls and you have ever walked out of a salon wondering why your hair looks pretty when wet but flat and stringy by the next morning, you have probably had a regular layered cut. Curly hair needs to be cut differently. That is exactly what the Ouidad method was designed to fix.
We are a Ouidad Certified Curly Hair Salon in Commack, NY. This is a guide for any curly girl on Long Island who is tired of being told their hair is "too much."
What Is the Ouidad Method?
Ouidad is a cutting technique invented in the 1980s by Ouidad herself, the woman who built her career around understanding curls. The signature method is called "Carve and Slice." Instead of cutting your hair in straight horizontal lines, we cut curl by curl, removing weight strategically and shaping each curl so it stacks beautifully against the next one.
The result is a cut that has shape, movement, and definition, with curls that hold their pattern between visits. It is the difference between a triangle of frizz and a sculpted, bouncy shape.
Why It Works for Long Island Hair
Humidity is a curl's best friend and worst enemy depending on the day. Long Island summers swing from dry beach mornings to muggy afternoons in a single day. A Ouidad cut works with your hair instead of fighting it, so your curls behave more predictably in any weather.
We see clients from across Suffolk and Nassau County, especially Commack, Dix Hills, Smithtown, Hauppauge, and East Northport, who specifically search for a curl specialist. Curl hair is not a quirk you have to manage. It is a texture that deserves expertise.
What to Expect on Your First Visit
The Consultation
We start by looking at your curl pattern (everyone has more than one), your density, your porosity, and your goals. We talk about your home routine, your wash schedule, and what frustrates you most about your hair right now. This is also when we decide whether you need a maintenance cut or the Ultimate Curly Girl Experience.
The Detox
If your hair has product buildup, hard water mineral residue, or fade-out from past color, a curly detox is the first thing we recommend. It clarifies the strand, resets the curl, and lets us see what we are actually working with.
The Cut
We cut your hair lightly wet, curl by curl. We are not just shortening the length; we are placing each cut so the curls fall naturally into shape. You will see us section, then carve, then check the curl, then carve again. It is slow and intentional. The cut itself often takes longer than a straight-hair cut.
The Style
We diffuse your hair so the curl pattern dries in shape, then refine the finish. We will show you how to scrunch, how to apply product, and how to plop. You leave with a routine you can actually do at home.
The Service Menu
Our curly services range from a Curly Style with Diffuser to the Ultimate Curly Girl Experience with product. Current pricing and full details are on the Service Menu.

Will you cut my hair wet or dry?
Both. The Ouidad method cuts on lightly wet hair, then refines as the hair dries so we can see how each curl actually falls. The goal is shape and definition, not bulk.
How often should I come in for a curly cut?
Most curly clients refresh every 8 to 12 weeks for a maintenance cut and style. We can also book detox treatments in between to keep your curl pattern healthy.
Do you sell products to take home?
Yes. We carry curl-specific products and your stylist will build you a routine based on your curl type and goals. The right home routine is half the battle.
